Es Pontàs, where Mallorca’s sunrise finds its frame

SANTANYÍ · MALLORCA

Es Pontàs is one of Mallorca’s most striking coastal landmarks, where geology, sea legends and a November sunrise meet inside a natural stone arch.

Es Pontàs feels like a doorway cut into the Mediterranean.
The arch turns an already dramatic stretch of coast into one of southeastern Mallorca’s most memorable silhouettes.

Near Cala Santanyí, Es Pontàs rises from the sea as a huge isolated limestone mass. Its name evokes a bridge, and that is exactly how it reads from shore: rock, open water and horizon held together by a single natural arch.

01 · WHERE IT IS

A natural landmark beside Cala Santanyí

Es Pontàs sits on Mallorca’s southeastern coast, close to Cala Santanyí. It can be viewed from land, from a coastal lookout reached on foot through the nearby residential area.

Getting there

Use Cala Santanyí as your reference point, then continue on foot toward the coast. The final section is best taken slowly, especially in damp conditions or before sunrise.

02 · HOW IT FORMED

The sea as a sculptor

Marine arches form where waves, salt and erosion exploit fractures and weaker zones in coastal rock. Over time, cavities widen until water breaks through, leaving a bridge-like structure behind.

Es Pontàs is therefore not a static object but part of an evolving coastline, still exposed to wind and sea.

03 · SEA STORIES AND LEGENDS

A rock that seems made for stories

Arches, caves and isolated rocks have always fed coastal imagination. Es Pontàs is no exception: from shore it resembles a gateway into the sea, a shape easily wrapped in stories of sailors, hidden passages and sea creatures.

Whether read through geology or folklore, the fascination comes from the same thing: a natural form so singular that it feels almost intentional.

04 · THE VIEWPOINT

Where the arch becomes a perfect frame

From the lookout, the arch can be read as part of the whole landscape. Small shifts in position change the opening, the amount of horizon visible through it and the balance between rock and sea.

05 · CLIMBING ABOVE THE SEA

Es Pontàs beyond the postcard view

The arch is also famous in the world of deep-water soloing, or psicobloc: ropeless climbing above the sea. Its steep walls and dramatic setting have made Es Pontàs an icon for this style of climbing.

Knowing this also changes the sense of scale. What looks compact from the viewpoint becomes enormous once you imagine a climber moving across the rock.

06 · MY NOVEMBER SUNRISE

When the sun appears behind the arch

I went to Es Pontàs in November with one image in mind: the sun rising directly behind the opening. Before dawn, the coast was quiet and the arch was still almost black against the brightening sky.

At that time of year, sunrise shifts far enough southeast for the light to align with the arch from the right viewpoint. For a few minutes, the rock stops being just a silhouette and becomes a frame for the sun itself.

Why November?

Because the seasonal path of the sun can place sunrise behind the arch from the viewpoint. The relationship between observer, rock and horizon changes through the year.

I went looking for one precise alignment and watched the arch become, for a few minutes, a window of light over the Mediterranean.
